Nakatundu Group – Uganda – September 2008

In April 2008, www.planttreesaveplanet.com gave £500 to the NAKATUNDU Group to develop a nursery bed of Moringa seedlings, instructing the agro-forestry and sensitising work on the benefits of the energy saving stoves.

The funds have also been used to teach the wider community about Agro-forestry.

In summer 2009, Father Christopher from the  Group has sent us new pictures of the Moringa planting work and  the following message.

‘We are very grateful for the support. The community has appreciated the moringa seedlings and are very encouraged to plant it because of its many wonderful and useful properties it has.

We are also going on well with instructing the instructors on agro forestry although funds are very much limited in terms of extending our operations throughout the entire sub-county.
Transport is a challenge to our operations as it is very expensive to hire a car or motorcycle to enable us reach deep in the villages for monitoring and evaluation.

The Board and Staff of Nakatundu group thank you very much for the funds we have received to date to enable us continue with our struggle of protecting and preserving  the environment  - this time by planting moringa trees   - with special properties.

Project achievements

Project Achievements to 2008 :-
Planttreesaveplanet donated over £1000 to this project initially to enable the following to take place (report on achievements in 2008)

1.     The community and children have understood the importance of planting trees. Most of them attributed tree planting as very essential as trees and forests provide a valuable teaching tool for a wide range of curriculum subjects in Uganda’s schools. Therefore, it was found that tree planting in the community is very important and a powerful teaching aid in environmental conservation used by both trainee and other stakeholders to further the cause of tree planting activity.

2.     The community and religious leaders have started viewing trees as a source of income for the future after receiving training on the importance of quick growing trees for immediate use and the message has been carried in the whole community, hence making the programme successful.

3.      Through this program we have also been recognised by National Forest Authority, which has also helped us with some training materials in community like Tree talk and also some charts, which can be used to assist with education of  the community members.

4.     We have trained farmers and local leaders on the importance of conserving the environment through tree planting and we have availed some community members with the seedlings e.g. Musizi, Eucalyptus, Acacia, (Kadaali, Keere, Nzo and Ndagi local names and some other quick growing tree seedlings.
33200 different spaces of trees (seedlings) have been availed to the community members for planting.

5. The tools and equipments have been distributed to various community members and they have been very much instrumental in the project implementation.

6. We have trained volunteers who have started to extend the message they have got of tree planting, protecting and conservation to other members with in the community.

planttreesaveplanet.com have been very pleased to collaborate with the Rainforest information Centre in Australia in contributing to the funding of the Ugandan projects – which they also have supported with small grants.

TREE PLANTING CAMPAIGNS IN NAZIGO SUBCOUNTY IN KAYUNGA DISTRICT

planttreesaveplanet.com donated £500 to the above project in 2008.
The donation will be used for the following; seminars and workshops, training school children and community members about tree planting, together with availing them seeds and seedling of trees for planting. training of trainers who will expand the training exercises in the community, establish tree nursery beds and work with  the community in  how to establish them. Tools and materials used in the establishment of nurseries in the community have been purchased and  the group are working on the establishment and facilitation of school and community environmental clubs.

The expected results from the project ;
  • Nursery beds will be established within the community to boost the tree planting  campaign beyond even the project area
  • The fruit trees planted will not only promote the environment but also boost the community nutrition and income by being able to sell the surplus
  • Women who are being left behind in the community towards the global challenges will now start a new trend in preserving and promoting the environment.
They plan to see that over 1500 trees are planted, basing on the budget of the grant you proposed to give for the project. The group plan to plant fruit trees and wood trees of which on both some have medicinal properties -  mainly local species.

Basing on the grant we are going to get from you, we are going to establish more than one nursery bed in five villages, when we receive extra funding we shall be able to widen the scope of operation to the other parishes.  The group also passed on this message;

‘We and others conserve and promote the environment, since we all have one earth on which we live. The only difference is that we are this way and you are that way.’

Highlights from progress report received in 2009

The organisation has trained volunteers who carry on training of other members of the community in particular women and young people highlighting the need for tree planting to protect the environment and generating income.

List of training courses.
1. Tree nursery bed management
2. Grafting of fruit trees
3. Establishment of tree nursery beds
4. Environmental conservation
5. Teaching the benefits of planting trees
6. Training the youth how to make energy saving stoves
7. Grafting of fruit trees

Evaluation of training
  • Trained women and young people  established tree nursery beds and take care of them well

  • The improved varieties of fruits trees have increased in the community.

  • Tree planting groups in the project area were formed and have established tree nursery beds from which they plant trees all around the schools and children take some seedling at home to plant them.

  • There is increase in planting of both fruit and wood trees in the community.

  • The women have shown much interest for the project since the project was designed for them to see that they also take part in the protection of the environment in which they are also stakeholders. Women expect to earn a living from the fruit trees by selling them to the local market when they mature in future and also feed on them.

  • School children and staffs are also interested in the sense that they have learnt the importance of tree planting in the community

  • Community members visit tree nursery bed to learn more about tree planting.

  • Women and youths in the community are well equipped with the knowledge about environmental management through training the community.

REPORT OF YOUTH, COMMUNITY, BIODIVERSITY, INITIATIVE – Uganda

www.planttreesaveplanet.com gave £300 to this project in spring 2008

This is an extract from a report sent to us by Seruma Livingstone, the Program Co-ordinator.
March 2008 to August   2008

The project is moving well on the community and other areas at large.  The fruit tree planting has been liked by the community.

Through our training workshops, people have realised the importance of planting fruit trees because the people will get – fruits as source of food and income in their houses and will at same time protect our environment.

Through our training workshops, people in the subcounty have realised that cutting trees can be hazardous to the environment and also to the people. The establishment of energy saving stove has reduced on the cutting of trees, the community have been so much impressed with saving stoves the way they keep fire for long and not producing the smoke when cooking..

The community members and local authorities have asked our project staff to continue educating people especially on making more saving stones per family and planting  both tree fruit and other trees, for food, security and protecting the environment.

The community members and their leaders have appreciated the work being done, with out segregation of people, in developing the community as far as protecting the environment is concerned.

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS

These project achievements have been attributed to community members (volunteers) who worked hand in hand with the organisation staff in ensuring that all activities have been implemented to the successes of the project. Below are the achievements.

Ø  We have given out fruit trees and medicinal trees to a number of villages; such trees include mangoes, eucalyptus trees, ovacado, maesopis, ficus ovata, orange, and juck fruit.

Ø  The organization has established a Tree nursery bed in the community planting both medicinal trees and fruit  trees.

Ø  YCBDI, has trained over 70 trainers to train the community members in each village .

Ø  The organization has set up environmental clubs in the primary schools who are given these trees to plant.  We have also given community members to plant medicinal trees, fruit trees and wood trees.
