Tamil Nadu India - Progress report (received February 2007) from Poor Peoples Development Education Society
In 2005, Poor Peoples Development Education Society (PPDES) has
raised tree nurseries with the support of planttreesaveplanet.com
through Emmaus International with the objective to provide employment
opportunities to women and to raise income for the farmers.
Tree nursery raising is one of the components of the scheme Promoting Traditional and Sustainable Agriculture
In total so far 212 farmers from 8 villages in Thogaimalai &
Kulithalai Blocks of Karur District in Tamil Nadu State of India were
involved in nursery raising and tree planting.
An expert in nursery raising Mr. Murugesan was assigned the
responsibility of raising different kinds of seedlings such as Teak,
Sapota, Jack fruit, Guava, Drumstick, Kari leaf, Neem, Pomegranate,
Lemon, Seetha, Agathi - all with a good survival rate.
In total 5000 tree seedlings were distributed to the farmers.
The survival rate of the trees is 90%.
Now the trees are 1 ½ years old. It will take another 2-3 years for the trees to bear fruits.

| Women Self Help Groups
Mr. Murugesan has also trained women on how to raise the tree plants.
PPDES report that the Self Help Group Members along with PPDES team
visit the tree plantation and make suggestions for improving growth as
they develop.
